Today I discovered your excellent blog through Google Alert - gardening. Congratulations for content and presentation. I have a container gardening blog myself on Wordpress and have put immediately a link to yours. It would be nice if you could do the same.Cross-linking can only benefit the visitors of our blogs. I will now go over your former postings and republish an abstract of some of these to get the interest of my readers to your fine contributions to container gardening. Wishing you a lot of success.

We have had a couple of summers in our home but are only starting to make changes to the yard. We have figured out most of the plants we have but this year is the year was start to add to the backyard garden and also to remove some plants we don't like or that have just gotten out of control.

We know we need to get some fertilizer but didn't really know what we would be looking for. I think it nice to know a little before going to the nursery and looking totally clueless.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Lori

Thanks for the detailed instructions on how to transplant. I've decided to give container gardening a try since I don't have any room here for a proper outdoor garden. I've got you bookmarked now, and have a feeling I'll be back for more help very shortly. :)

Well we are beginner gardeners. I have my memories of a childhood garden but all I got to do was weed the garden so I have a lot to learn.

Lori, I have been planning to start an indoor herb garden but it keeps getting put off by other things that seem more important.

I had planned to get out to the nursery this weekend but here it is Sunday already and I haven't made it yet.

Thanks for the tips. I have a lot of pots just piled up with bits of dirt still in them, so I will give them a good washing, in bleach, like you suggest.

Keep the tips coming.

Lori you are just full of helpful information. Thanks again.

We are going to our local nursery in the next week and will be picking up a lot of stuff we will need for our first backyard garden.

Your site has already been helping my wife and myself learn some thing we need to succeed at our first garden. Well worth having in my RSS feed reader.

Just about a foot of snow left in our backyard but that will be gone in just a week or so and we can start measuring and digging. Yeeee Haaaaaw

Excellent advice Lori

I love cuttings and have plants all over the house. My friends are always asking me for clippings and I enjoy starting them before I give them away.

We, my wife and I, have not tried this with anything we have growing in our backyard garden but this will be our first years actively working our yards so I am sure I am in for a lot of learning.

I think your post would have been even better with a couple of photos of how you do your cuttings.

Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

My wife and I are eager for spring so we can start our backyard garden. This will be first for us as we have not had a property large enough to have much of a garden so we mostly grew flowers.

It's still the middle of winter here and the snow is pretty deep but the desire to get started is really burning so I thought we might start an indoor herb garden.

I do keep plants in the house and love them but my wife has no interest in indoor plants at all.

We have been married for 25 years and in all that time she has had one plant and I am the one that takes care of it. :)

I am the one with the green thumb so far but my wife Jenny is eager to learn the ropes so she has one as well.

Yes, plants have to be actively growing. There are a few that show better abilities of absorbing chemicals, weeping fig, bamboo palm, spider plant, rubber plant, to name a few of them. February is a good time to take cuttings from your geraniums and I root mine in soil.

Questions: Do the indoor plants have to be actively growing to improve the clean air filtering system?

As well, I have two geraniums that are growing quite nicely. When is a good time to take cuttings and should I root them in soil or water?

Do you know if container gardening lowers your carbon footprint? Raises it? Do you know any sites that account for that when they give you your carbon footprint?
Does anybody know about this site ( http://www.earthlab.com ) ? I have seen other environmental sites with carbon calculators like yahoo and tree huggers, but I am wondering what the deal with earthlab.com is? I saw they also published a list last month of the top ten greenest cities ( http://www.efficientenergy.org/Top-Ten-Green-Cities-in-the-United-States ). Does anyone know if this site is better than the others? Fill me in!

I took their carbon foot print test and it was pretty interesting, they said that I put out 4.5 tons of carbon, does anyone know about any other tests?
